Coco Montoya

Saturday Jan. 10 at Moe's Alley
The funny thing about blues guitar maestro Coco Montoya is that when he began his career as a musician, he wasn’t a guitarist at all. He was a drummer. As the story goes, Montoya got his start on the six-string when blues legend Albert Collins picked him out of a nightclub to be the drummer for his upcoming tour. Soon, “the Master of the Telecaster” was teaching Montoya his guitar secrets, and by the early ’80s Montoya himself was a qualified bluesman. In another turn of nightclub-related events, Montoya recognized John Mayall in the audience at one of his gigs, and after dedicating a red-hot version of “All Your Love” to the Bluesbreakers’ frontman, Mayall offered him a job in the band. I know, some guys have all the luck—by ’85, Montoya had effectively filled the position once held by Clapton and later Peter Green.
